Treat Yourself To Peace Of Mind This Valentine’s Day

February 12, 2016

It really doesn’t matter if you’re spending Valentine’s Day on your own or with a significant other this year. What matters is what you choose do with your time, and money, of course. Some of us are heading to an obligatory expensive dinner, some of us are celebrating at Sonic (here’s lookin’ at you, Mr. and Mrs. Groovy), while others are enjoying some solo time or adventures with friends. No matter what your poison, I propose that you treat yourself to one thing-big or small-that will enhance your financial future.

Go Ahead, Treat Yourself

This Valentine’s weekend, I challenge you to do ONE thing that will propel your finances into a better place. Go ahead and treat yourself to a less expensive, celebratory dinner, or cook at home, or join Mr. and Mrs. Groovy at your favorite, grease-filled, fast food joint! Then take the money you saved and throw it towards debt repayment or long-term investments.

Don’t want to forego the deliciousness of that much-anticipated, pricey dinner? No problem. Do something else that could have a lasting effect on the future of your finances.

A List Of Options

Here’s an impromptu list of options that would suffice:

-Clean out clutter and list it on Craigslist

Cut your mobile/data package-most people don’t use all of their data anyway

Cancel your cable! You know you’ve been thinking about it for a long time

-Stop getting highlights and go back to your natural hair color-experience talking here

-Increase your savings rate by a percentage point…or 2!

-Vow to create weekly menus before heading to the grocery store

-Eat lunches at your desk

-Rein in unnecessary shopping

Happy Valentine’s Weekend!

However you choose to celebrate, or not celebrate, enjoy your weekend! I spent many years as a single gal, so I understand that not everyone has a significant other sending them roses or taking them out. And I also KNOW (from experience) that being single can be really awesome and even preferred by some folks. So, no matter what your situation may be, Show Some Love, Go Enjoy Yourself, And Save More Money!

Now, what do you plan on doing to treat yourself to better finances this weekend?

  • I love this idea!! I’m going to commit to planning a very frugal grocery trip and menu next week.

We don’t usually do anything on purpose for Valentine’s day, rather there’s often some event that is happening around the same time and we treat that as our gift to ourselves. This year we’re ‘celebrating’ by seeing Deadpool and having chimichangas.

  • This made me chuckle, because hubs and I have recently had the following conversation:
Hubs: It appears by watching this commercial, if I don’t buy you a big hunking diamond, that I must surely not love you forever, and if I don’t buy you chocolates, a mushy card, and take you to an expensive restaurant, then surely I am just SCUM!
Me: Oh, baby, I could never think of you as just SCUM! How bout’s I fix us a pizza, and we snuggle up together with a good book, and think of all the ways we could celebrate because we have ABSOLUTELY NO DEBT!

See why I love this man??? Truly my Valentine!

  • This weekend is actually kind of a mini stay-cation for me because I have Monday off of work for President’s Day! I am treating myself by dedicating two full days to staying in my sweats, and writing. 🙂 My fiance is cooking a wonderful dinner tonight to celebrate Valentines day! Luckily, he’s in to experimenting with recipes that he always somehow knows how to even create restaurant meals we’ve found on menus in our area. Also, to propel my savings – I’ve been requesting closet clean out bags from ThredUp.com and that’s been working wonders!

  • We are heading out for dinner tonight. A little fancy, but not over the top. Mrs. FireStation wouldn’t want much that I cooked! ❤️
