Sunday Brunch On The Cheap

November 9, 2015

As many of you know by now, one of my biggest frugal downfalls is eating out!  I LOVE it.  In fact, I used to joke that my goal was to be able to eat out for every meal.  Crazy, I know.  When I met Mr. Money Monster two years ago, he was definitely frugal-minded (and still is) and he was really good at NOT eating out.  I admit it, I corrupted him.  Now he loves eating out as much as I do.  Not good for two people aiming for financial independence by 2021.  Since we got super serious about early retirement, we have significantly cut back on our outside-of-the-home dining experiences.  However, one last hold out has been our ultra trendy Sunday brunch…because we’re cool like that, ya know 😉

Sunday Date Days

Sundays are usually reserved for our weekly date day.  What can we say?  We like keeping it real.  As such, we love starting our day off at a local, artsy fartsy coffee shop where we can indulge in over-priced coffees, teas, breakfast sandwiches and muffins.  This has been known to cost us upwards of $40!  That was not a typo.  I’m so embarrassed.  *currently hanging my head in frugal shame*

Over The River And Through The Woods

Move over pretentious coffee shops, the new State of the Union goal is to retire in 2021.  To hit this target, we’re buckling our financial belts and biting the Sunday brunch bullet.  We’re not giving it up; we’re switching locations.  We’re heading over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house!  Granted, it’s actually two exits down the highway, but I really wish it was over the river and through the woods!  Sometimes I take the “back” way (no highway).  That has to count for something 🙂

Today was the second Sunday brunch we have had at my mother’s house.  It’s a chance to do something special, have a wonderful breakfast, and spend time with loved ones.  We are actually toying with the idea of expanding Sunday brunch and even rotating between a few family members.  Picture it.  Rotate Sunday brunch between friends and family every Sunday at 10am, everyone brings something and everyone enjoys great food and great conversation.  The cost is nearly nothing and you’re creating memories.

The New Face Of Sunday Brunch

As you can see, Mr. MM really outdid himself this morning.  It wasn’t the most nutritious of meals, but boy was it delicious.  Not to fear, the last brunch was much healthier.  Today, we allowed Mini Monster to contribute menu requests.  This was a picture of my actual plate before I promptly devoured it.  No longer do we need to drop upwards of $40 to sit in a cold, generic coffee shop to make our Sunday brunch special.  As a special treat, I took over some old photo albums with our goodie bag today.  As Mr. MM was preparing the food, the rest of us were flipping through old photos and reminiscing over all the good times we have shared together.  This is a financial and social win!  Try it and let us know what you think!
